Equipment for Loan

A variety of equipment is available for loan to VIU students and employees through the VIU Library. The equipment collection includes computer accessories, photography equipment, audio and video recording equipment, presentation equipment, tools, board games, and a selection of cables and adapters.

Students and employees can loan most equipment for up to 7 days at a time.

Borrowing and returning equipment

Use the self-serve equipment booking tool to reserve equipment at either the Nanaimo or Cowichan campus, up to 14 days in advance.

Equipment must be picked up from and returned to an employee, in-person, at the Library Service Desk during open hours. Make sure to bring your VIU ID with you.

Laptop loans

Laptops are available to loan to VIU students only. Visit the Laptop loans page for more information.

The IT Service Desk provides laptop loans to employees for a variety of purposes and is often able to provide loans on short-notice. Employees should contact IT to arrange all laptop loans. 

Equipment on reserve

Some common equipment is available at the Library Service Desk for 4- or 24-hour loan. These materials cannot be pre-booked and are available on a "first-come, first-served" basis. This equipment includes:

  • Whiteboard marker kits
  • Over-ear headphones
  • Calculators
  • Scissors
  • Rulers
  • Extension cords

Terms and Conditions

Submitting a booking or borrowing equipment indicates acceptance of the following terms:

  • Equipment loans are limited to current VIU students, employees, and retirees.
  • A VIU ID card is required to check out equipment.
  • Equipment not picked up within 1 hour of its reservation time may be cancelled at the discretion of Library employees.
  • Equipment must be returned in the same condition it was received in, along with all included cables, accessories, and cases. Borrowers agree to pay full repair or replacement charges for damages/loss incurred to the equipment while it is in their care.
  • Equipment must be returned by the due date. Incomplete and late equipment returns may result in late fines up to the cost of replacement equipment, restriction of access to VIU Library resources, and restriction from registration and graduation at VIU.
  • Equipment must be returned in-person by the borrower, during open hours, to a Library employee at the VIU Library Service Desk.
