VIU Library's Family Space is reserved for use by children, along with their parents or caregivers. It is 516 square feet in size and can hold up to 14 people. This 2SLGBTQ+ and breast/chest feeding-friendly space is designed to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for learning, play and rest.
The family space is located on the Nanaimo campus in building 305 on the 3rd floor, north west corner.
This room is located in the 24/7 access section of the library.
The space is equipped with comfortable seating for learning and play for both children and adults. It contains four computer workstations.
We are pleased to offer a collection of children's reading materials through a partnership with Vancouver Island Regional Library. These items can be checked out from the service desk during open hours. Items can be returned to VIU Library or any VIRL branch.
The space features a mural entitled Lhuxw u tu Snuyw'uyulh (Flow of the Teachings) by Snuneymuxw artist Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun.
Washrooms are located adjacent to the family space, consisting of a single-stall gender-inclusive washroom, as well as a multi-stall women’s washroom. There is also a multi-stall, gender-inclusive washroom at the main entrance of the library which includes a state of the art universal access washroom and change table.
The family space is designed as a comfortable place for nursing but a private nursing room is also available in the gender-inclusive washrooms located near the main entrance of the library.
