Library Instruction

About the Tutorial

VIU has launched an interactive, asynchronous tutorial, created collaboratively by librarians and employees across campus, to support students and the broader VIU community in developing critical AI literacy skills. This tutorial provides students with an understanding of how to evaluate and engage with AI-generated content responsibly. The tutorial is in its first iteration, with ongoing lessons to be released as they are completed.

  • Lesson One: What You Need to Know (Available)

  • Lesson Two: Evaluating Generative AI Tools and Outputs (Future release - a short segment is partially available in Lesson One)

  • Lesson Three: Using Generative AI Tools (Future release)

  • Lesson Four: Impacts of AI (Future release - a short segment on ethics partially available in Lesson One)

You may choose to direct students to the open course in VIULearn, or you can upload the modules directly into your course. The open course can be found by clicking on the ‘Discover’ tab in VIULearn, and searching for “AI Literacy Tutorial.” You may choose to upload only specific sections that are relevant to you and your students. More information on uploading the modules can be found below.

Read more about the course's creation and the group that created it.

How to Import the Course

You can download it as a D2L import file. This import file contains modules for the AI Literacy tutorial. If using only specific modules/lessons, the other content can be removed after import. Use Chrome or Firefox for the best experience. Avoid Safari, which has caused troubleshooting issues.

How to Import a Whole Course

  1. Login to VIULearn
  2. Go to the course shell you want to upload the module into
  3. From the course navigation bar, click Faculty Tools, then Course Admin
  4. Under Site Resources, choose Import/Export/Copy Components
  5. Select Import Components > from a course package
  6. Click Upload and select the .zip file you downloaded (don’t unzip it!)
  7. Once uploaded, click Import All Components
  8. Wait for the confirmation message that the import has completed
  9. Click Return to Content. The imported module(s) will appear in your Table of Contents, usually at the bottom. You can rename or move them as needed.

Troubleshooting

  • Ensure the file you’re importing is still in the .zip file. Some browser extensions may automatically unzip the file, causing import issues.
  • If your browser unzips the file automatically, try downloading it again using Chrome or Firefox.
  • For additional troubleshooting, reach out to us directly at research.help@viu.ca or refer to CIEL’s Importing Course Contents page.
