Browsing in the VIU Library's print collection

The library's print book collection is located on the 4th floor.  To browse the stacks (book shelves)  for various topics on birds, go to the Call Number section:  QL 600s  (e.g. QL 671 - General Ornithology, QL 697 - Behavior, Migration, Ecology, etc.)

Find Books in the VIU Library

  • Enter words to search
  • For print books, if applicable select library location: "Nanaimo" or "Cowichan" or "Powell River"
  • To see ebooks only, select to refine your search to "full text online" 

 

Use LibrarySearch (above) to find book/ebook information on birds in the VIU Library Collection.  You can combine various keywords to narrow your search.  For example, searching with the keyword: bird* will enable you to search for bird or birds.  To narrow your search, combine this keyword with others.

For example:

bird*

bird* anatomy

bird* physiology

bird* conservation

bird* migration

bird* song*

bird* flight

bird* courtship

bird* behaviour

bird* nesting

bird* classification

bird* extinction

bird* distribution

 

Note:  Use quotation marks to enclose a phrase of two or more words to enable them to be searched together.

For example:

bird* "british columbia"

bird* "vancouver island"

Finding and Requesting books not in the VIU Library

If the VIU Library doesn't have enough books on your topic, then you can request to borrow books from other libraries. 

First, you can search the WorldCat catalogue to get the citation information of a book you want to order, then use the VIU InterLibrary Loan System to request the book and have it brought to our library.
