Overview
VIU Library's Family Space is reserved for use by children, along with their parents or caregivers. It is 516 square feet in size and can hold up to 14 people. This 2SLGBTQ+ and breast/chest feeding-friendly space is designed to provide a comfortable and welcoming environment for learning, play and rest.
Location
The family space is located on the Nanaimo campus in building 305 on the 3rd floor, north west corner.
Hours
This room is open during the library's service desk hours. Please ask at service desk for access. Use is limited to children and their parents or caregivers only.
Resources and Equipment
The space is equipped with comfortable seating for learning and play for both children and adults. It contains four computer workstations.
Children's Reading Material
We are pleased to offer a collection of children's reading materials through a partnership with Vancouver Island Regional Library. These items can be checked out from the service desk during open hours. Items can be returned to VIU Library or any VIRL branch.
Artwork
The space features a mural entitled Lhuxw u tu Snuyw'uyulh (Flow of the Teachings) by Snuneymuxw artist Eliot White-Hill, Kwulasultun.
Washrooms
Washrooms are located adjacent to the family space, consisting of a single-stall gender-inclusive washroom, as well as a multi-stall women’s washroom. There is also a multi-stall, gender-inclusive washroom at the main entrance of the library which includes a state of the art universal access washroom and change table.
Breast/chest feeding
The family space is designed as a comfortable place for nursing but a private nursing room is also available in the gender-inclusive washrooms located near the main entrance of the library.
