After experiencing the Day of the Dead in Mexico, Aleja, a Mexican-American teen, plans a big Día de los Muertos party at her home in California. The tricky thing is that her best friend plans to throw a big Halloween party on the same day. Aleja narrates this story mostly in the present tense and with some past tense.

Juana, la Avanzadora tells the story of a woman who fought for the freedom of her country at a time when women were relegated to the sidelines. The history of women during the Venezuelan War of Independence is marked by their absence. They are better known as cooks, nurses or companions in the revolutionary struggles of their husbands and male relatives. We know little about the women who fought on the battlefield against the Spanish Empire. Juana Ramírez is an exception. At the age of 15, she joined the fight as a laundress and then as a nurse. But when all seemed lost at the Battle of Alto de los Godos, her actions at the head of a 100-strong all-female artillery unit won them the war. Access a longer story tailored for intermediate to high-level Spanish learners, using just 328-word families and 112 familiar words that includes a word list at the end of the book.

A historical fiction novella written in the present tense of a 16th century Quito legend during the Spanish conquest and Incan resistance, to the formation of Spanish colonies in what is now known as Latin America. An Incan adapts to survive colonization by dressing and living like a Spaniard. His spirit of survival and his wits keep him alive. This is an easy reader for mid-beginner and high-beginner students. Each chapter has a glossary and a list of historical facts. Depicting the events and accompanying the facts section are drawings by Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala, an Indigenous chronicler who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries.

María Cano was a Colombian thinker and politician who, at a time when women had little voice or representation in society, raised hers in the fight for the rights of workers and women. This story, written for level two Spanish learners, has 395 word families, of which 145 are cognates.

Guaitipán was a warrior leader who, together with her Indigenous brothers, led for years a powerful resistance against the Spanish conquest in what is now known as Colombia.
