Copyright Considerations

If you intend to use substantial parts from a third party work in your own, if the other work is not in the public domain, and is not made available through an enabling license such as Creative Commons, you need to seek permission from the copyright holder(s) for your specific use.

The Copyright Office's Student Guide has a section on seeking permission. Please remember to cite materials appropriately within your works.

Copyright Request Template: Students

You may want to use or adapt the student permission request template provided in the Copyright Office's Student Guide. Follow any terms of use and keep a copy of the permission, including how to cite the material.

Copyright Request Template: Instructors

You may want to use or adapt the instructor permission request template provided in the Copyright Office's Instructor Guide. Follow any terms of use and keep a copy of the permission, including how to cite the material. It is good practice to retain such permissions on file even beyond the period of active use, and to include a permissions statement with reproduced material.
