Research Data Management

The Vancouver Island University Dataverse is part of Borealis, the Canadian Dataverse Repository, and is a research data repository for the use of VIU researchers.

Through Borealis, files are held in a secure environment on Canadian servers. Researchers can choose to make data available to the public, to specific individuals, or to keep it locked. For more information about the service and whether it may fit your application, see:

Datasets that are made publicly available through the VIU Dataverse are indexed and searchable through open data discovery databases such as Lunaris, Canada’s national discovery service for multidisciplinary data from research institutions across the country.

Consultation about Dataverse and Research Data Management

VIU Library is presently offering access to the Vancouver Island University Dataverse on a mediated basis, which includes Library support for upload of data files and assigning metadata to support accurate description for effective data retrieval and accurate citation.

Please contact us to discuss your specific data management requirements and plan.

Metadata templates

Part of depositing data in a repository is providing information about the data (metadata) that will assist other researchers in locating it, understanding something about it, and also possibilities and constraints regarding reuse. Here are downloadable versions of a detailed metadata template that the Library consults in creating records to accompany deposited datasets.
