VIU Card

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a charge for the VIU card?

There is no charge for your first student ID card. The card is funded through your student service fees.

My student VIU card is expiring soon. What do I do?

Since your enrollment status can now be verified electronicially, you do not need to replace your card even if the date printed on your card shows it is expired. Your current card will still work for building access, library checkouts, printing, meal plans, and identification verification at exams. By not replacing your card, you are helping support our sustainability efforts.

What do I do if I lose my student VIU card?

If your card is lost or stolen please report it immediately to the Library Service Desk. There is a fee of $20 to replace your card. Payment can be made by debit or credit card.

Why have you increased the cost to replace my lost or damaged student VIU card?

Though the cost of card supplies has risen each year due to inflation, VIU has not increased the card replacement fee in many years. This increased fee more accurately reflects the costs associated with reprinting these cards.

How can I get student discounts if my card is expired?

Use the Deals app to get access to student discounts in the community. Some off-campus businesses may still request proof of enrollment. The university is committed to informing local partners about the Deals app to help support these interactions. If you encounter any issues accessing student discounts, please reach out to VIUSU or the Library.

I want to buy a discounted bus pass from VIUSU. How do I prove I'm student if my student VIU card says it is expired or it has no expiry date?

You can use your current course schedule available through your student record as proof of enrollment.

I got an email that my VIU card is ready, but I can't pick it up yet. How long do you keep VIU cards for?

Cards are kept at the Library Service Desk for up to two years. That being said, please pick up your card as soon as possible after you have been notified it is ready for pickup.

I'm no longer a student, but my card isn't expired. Why can't I access buildings or my library/computer account?

Building and account access is connected to your status as a student at VIU, and not your student card. Access privileges automatically expire 6 months after the completion of your last enrolled course.

What file types do you accept online and what is the maximum file size?

Please upload your file as a jpeg. The photo can be up to 2MB in size.

What if my photo does not meet the requirements after I have uploaded it?

If your photo does not meet the requirements specified, you will receive an email letting you know the reason it was rejected and that you will need to upload a new photo so that your card can be processed.

Is the card transferable?

Student VIU cards are non-transferable. Do not share your card or its information. The person whose name appears on the card is responsible for use of the card, including library items borrowed and any charges incurred.

I have a VIU card but it doesn't let me scan into the Library.
