New Student Orientation

Kate's Email of August 2005 re. New Student Orientation Day

...Two librarians will be in as well with you: they are running stations in the Commons and at the Ref Desk, and a student helper will run the station by the stairs. I will program the doors to shut at 4:30 but open again at 6:30 and close at 8:30 pm that night for the student orientation hours.

Here's how I expect it to go roughly, but feel free to make it up as you go along!

  • We are responsible for two stations: one at the Service Desk, one at the foot of the stairs.
  • We are expecting groups of 20 students to arrive about every 4 minutes.
  • Each group will have a Student Guide with them.
  • At the entrance they will be shown the ID station, then move to the Commons for a Discovery Account demo, then move further into the Commons to get a spiel about the Commons from Johnny, then move to the Ref Desk for a MARLIN demo, then they will come to the Service Desk for a spiel about activating their cards and what services are available in the Library
  • Then they will move to the foot of the stairs for a spiel about where the various Library equipment and collections are located
  • Then they will go up the stairs to view the stacks and finish at the Writing Centre.
  • On the way out, they will have their passport stamped and be handed the Student Guide.

We need to work up and practice two approximately 4-minute spiels--one for the Service Desk station, the other for the stairs station.

The Service Desk one should list services available at the Service Desk, such as:

  • Activating your card and getting a PIN
  • How to use your PIN
  • Putting money on your card (at desk and dispensers) for printing and copying
  • Checking out books, other materials (Self-Check too). No card no service.
  • Renewing
  • Returning (including outside Bookdrop)
  • Reserves
  • Interlibrary Loan and Holds pickup
  • Loan periods and fines
  • Equipment Loans
  • Please add to this, Mary and Janice, to complete it, you will be the ones at this station

The Stairs station should point out the locations of various Library collections and equipment, ie. From right to left:

  • Scanning and productivity stations
  • Copiers & stapler, hole punch, paper cutter area (another one on 4th floor if these are busy)
  • Print Station
  • Reference Collection
  • Government Publications
  • CD's in cabinets
  • Maps in cabinets
  • Periodicals on microfilm (includes newspapers)
  • Periodical collection (current periodicals and newspaper locations)
  • Internet connections along walls
  • Video/DVD viewing carrals
  • Curriculum Lab
  • Video / DVD collection / Video Services office
  • Stacks upstairs, move them on.

Tom and Margo will be the ones at this station. Mary and Janice, could you please spend some time with Tom and Margo ahead of time at that spot, making sure they are comfortable with pointing out these locations.

Thanks so much for taking this one on, I'll check in with you briefly before I leave Tuesday, if you have any questions or comments about the Student Orientation.
