Can a laptop be connected to a TV in order to monitor/project audio?

Occasionally a client will find that more convenient than carrying speakers to a classroom. Bill's answer is YES it will work but TV sound is not the best.

Sound comes out of headphone jack on laptop and goes into line or A/V input on TV. Note some of our older TV's do not have LINE INput jacks on the back. The TV then plays the same role as our powered speakers.
Client will require a cable (e.g. 100B) to connect from the headphone jack on the laptop to the LINE IN jacks on the TV - often on the back but sometimes on the front.
