Why is a species found in one location and not another? Why and how did its distribution change over time? What predictive power does this information provide for applied conservation and management, and how can it affect policy decisions? Biogeographers investigate dynamic patterns in the distribution of life forms, both spatially and temporally (across space, and through time), and seek to understand the causes of observed changes. Biogeography is a broad field integrating understandings, approaches and information from a number of disciplines, including evolutionary biology, ecology, paleontology, and a number of subfields of physical geography(Dalton, GEOG 373 Course Outline, Winter 2015).
